A Little History About Minster, Ohio

In 1832 a group of people led by Franz Joseph Stallo formed a settlement, which at the time became Stallostown. They bought 640 acres for $800.00 in silver. The site was divided into 144 lots. Life at that time was one of deprivation and adversity. It was on March 5, 1839 that the village was incorporated as Minster, Ohio deriving its name from the city in Germany.

This small village which still retains a rich heritage from our German ancestors was the main link between old Fort Loramie, located three miles south and St. Marys (Girty Town), located ten miles to the north. Later, when the Miami and Erie Canal was built, Minster was centrally located and this produced a thriving commercial trade. Hundreds of 60 and 80 ton freight boats moved up and down the canal. Passenger packets carrying 40 to 50 people made the trip to Cincinnati in two days and three nights. The fare in 1858 was $1.50. The entire area between Cincinnati and Toledo prospered.

The beginning of the 20th century brought with it the spirit of industrial growth to partner along with its agricultural prosperity. New industries were founded and those already established were expanded. The same is true today, as this is reflected in the present industries and prosperous conditions of the town.

With a population of nearly 2,800 people, Minster has the pride and peaceful living conditions of a small community, yet it is near many of the large cities.

Minster possesses a highly reputable public school system. Ninety percent of Minster’s graduates further their education. Many recreational opportunities exist. There is a spacious municipal swimming pool, an 18-hole golf course as well as an 18-lane bowling alley. Many social clubs are also available.
